A deeper democracy By Angela Eagle MP A Catalyst Working Paper. Labour’s extraordinary 1997 election victory brought a dramatic end to a long period of Conservative hegemony in British politics. But despite many achievements Labour in office has yet to break decisively with the market fundamentalist ideology that remains entrenched in our political life and public institutions. Drawing on her experiences as a minister in the first two Labour governments, Angela Eagle argues that a permanent social democratic transformation of society will be achieved only through a radical deepening of democracy that engages with the complex and dispersed nature of social power today. Angela Eagle was a minister in the departments of the environment, social security and the Home Office from 1997 to 2002, and is a founding member of the New Wave group of Labour MPs. NEW!
